The Pentagon has developed a laser system for fighter jets. See the story

Essentially, they've managed to make a laser powerful enough yet not so bulky (you need lots of cooling power for high energy lasers). By 2007, they want to make it usable as some sort of anti-missile defence system.
So now we just we deflector shields, repulsor pads, and something resembling an X ...
